Feel pain in your ribs while running ?

That pain is what we call , Stitches.

Firstly, what is a stitch?

It is described as a sharp, stabbing pain or cramping in the side, a little below the ribs. It may also involve pain in the shoulder tip too. This causes us to stop our exercise or our run.

We want to be motivated and push ourselves to our limits during our workout or run but these stitches disrupt our momentum and motivation. Getting stitches is indeed frustrating!

Secondly, what causes a stitch?

* Drinking too much fluid or eating too close to the start of or during exercise

* Reduced blood to the diaphragm

* Jolting motion causing stress on the ligaments between abdominal organs and diaphragm

Thirdly, how can we prevent getting stitches?

* To be safe, do not consumer heavy meals 4-5 hours. Ensure the food that you consumed is digested properly before carrying out your workout. So, to ensure that, give your body about 4-5 hours. If you want to have something light 2-3 hours before, an ideal choice is to have a fruit.

During your exercise, drink sips of water only.

* Proper warm up and stretching

Warm up your muscles and perform 5-10 minutes of dynamic stretches. Start working out or running at a low pace first before pushing yourself.

* Focus on breathing, keeping it long and deep. This will help to relax your muscles.
